I am Saxy.

Since I picked up the saxophone at age 11, I’ve performed in over 1,000 live shows with 10+ different bands. However, my passion for music doesn’t stop at the saxophone. Graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston expanded my love for harmony/melody beyond the sax to songwriting, singing, and gathering people around the piano for impromptu singalongs. You can hear my performances and compositions on TV and the big screen. Listen for my work in Sex & the City, The Lying Game, Shameless, Fox Sports broadcasts, Leaving Limbo, Odd Mom Out, and Parental Discretion.

Currently, I am the saxophonist for the South Bay’s home-town heroes, Barley. This has given me some amazing opportunities to open for artists like Gin Blossoms, Sugar Ray, Everclear (Art Alexakis), and Toad The Wet Sprocket in festivals such as KAABOO, BeachLife Festival, and showcase at South by Southwest.

Additionally, as the current saxophonist and keyboardist for the nationally-touring Private Eyes, A Tribute to Daryl Hall & John Oates, I am driven to make sure every fan of ours is having an absolute blast! This commitment to engage extends to the many bands I have been fortunate to perform with of the years, including Fool's Logic (Supertramp Tribute), Distant Cousins (Ami Kozak), Cubensis (Grateful Dead Tribute), The Letters Home (Andrew Monheim), Sunshine Soul, The RentAFriend Band, RetroFit, RoofTop, The Reveal, Obasi: The Afro-Funk Unconscious, and many more...

In the studio, I’ve worked with celebrated recording artists like Melissa Manchester and Grammy Award-winning producers and engineers Bob Cutarella, Francis Buckley, Tom Weir, J.J. Blair, and John Baffa. I can also be seen performing in the Dave Matthew's Band music video "You & Me."

Ultimately, Saxy is not an individual or a band, but an experience. It is about casting aside limitations and living fearless in the moment while inspiring my audience to do the same. More than anywhere else in the world, I feel at home on a stage. This is where I can create a fully interactive entertainment experience that’s never been done and will never be done in exactly the same way again. The saxophone may be my means, but impacting lives is my mission - including my son’s, whose own musical journey is well underway.

If you come to one of my shows, prepare to be set free of your expectations, fall in love with the saxophone, and embrace your uncontrollable urge to dance.

More than any other instrument, the saxophone connects with people on a visceral and primordial level. Its tone, range, and timbre closely mirrors that of the natural human voice, which is why listeners are subliminally drawn to its sound. It can seamlessly transition between the romantic resonance of strings and the intense impact of brass or percussion.

From the moment I was first dubbed Saxy by my bandmates, I have witnessed the power and impact the saxophone can have on an audience. Saxy, which I consider both a verb and a noun, represents both me and my mission to show that the saxophone has entertainment value beyond its current expected role in music. More than just a “bonus” to have on stage, the sax is a leader in its own right, entirely capable of fulfilling the role of lead guitar or being wielded by a front-man.

I'm here to break boundaries, live fearlessly, and inspire the "Saxy" in you!

SAXY'S FIRST SKATEBOARD SOLO

STORIES

SAXY

So as you might know already, I tend to get a little wild when it comes to solos.

On Halloween, Barley plays a show where we all dress in costumes based on a theme (usually one based on a TV show or movie). In 2010, it was decided that we would be going with The Big Lebowski for our show on the outdoor patio of On The Rocks in Redondo Beach. Back then, I was unfamiliar with the film and was informed that I would be dressing as ‘Donnie.’ I bought the DVD the next day and watched intently; only to realize there's not really much I could do to distinguish myself as ‘Donnie’ as he is the most normal-looking of the main characters. However, it finally hit me near the end that the only way to indicate who I was playing would be to carry around a Folgers Coffee can (spoiler alert!).

Out of all of our Halloween shows over the years, this one was the most memorable. Everybody nailed their costumes, we played great versions of the music featured in the film, and Barley fans still talk about this show to this day. Out of all the costumes, Mike Morano’s rendition of ‘Jesus’ was epic.

During the show, we made several comical attempts to recreate scenes from the movie (Maud painting via zip line, the Dude floating down a bowling alley lane, etc.). To accomplish this, I brought out my longboard so Jason and Brent could lay chest-down on it so it appeared they were gliding along the ground. We made several attempts to pull off the scenes during the show (to varying degrees of failure) and ultimately, we moved on - yet the longboard remained.

For those that know Barleys show’s well, we tend to go wild on our cover of “All Along The Watchtower.” Emboldened by the music, I once again took my solo to the audience - but did so with the now available longboard at my feet. Fortunately, our good friend and photographer Michael Pliskin was there to capture my first (and only) skateboard sax solo.

I weaved through the outdoor patio around the tables, soloing in motion along the uneven floorboards. The joy in the audience swelled as I rode around them, playing right in their faces - all while trying not to crash. Fortunately, both I and my sax survived, but it certainly invited questions from my mother regarding my choices when it was posted as the banner image on Barley’s Facebook page the next morning.
